Recently, the innovative team of gene safety assessment and detection in the Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, in collaboration with Hainan university, has analyzed the molecular mechanism of drought resistance in Shanlan uplandrice, and established a technical system for drought resistance assessment of Shanlan upland Rice, the varieties with strong drought resistance and excellent comprehensive characters were identified, which provided a theoretical basis for the innovation and application of local germplasm resources in Hainan province. The results were published in International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.

Shanlan upland rice is a characteristic upland rice in Hainan province, which has abundant genetic diversity and is an important germplasm resource for breeding watersaving and droughtresistant rice varieties. The team identified the drought resistance of 48 varieties including Shanlan upland rice, upland rice and cultivated rice, classified the drought resistance of different varieties, and sequenced the transcriptome of 5 varieties with different drought resistance. The GSEA results showed that the free amino acid related pathway of shanlan upland rice increased under drought stress, while Upland rice (Yellow leaf rice) mainly responded to drought by regulating photosynthesis.WhileShanlan upland rice activated more response pathways to cope with droughtstress. Further studies showed that the protein OS03G0623100, which was significantly up-regulated under drought stress, interacted with the drought-resistant LEA protein, which contributed to the drought resistance of rice. The team collected more than 200 Hainan Shanlan upland rice varieties and a series of cultivation techniques have been developed such as Shanlan upland rice-fruit intercropping, Shanlan uplandrice water cropping, and Shanlan upland rice-hybrid rice pest control, it laid a foundation for the innovation of germplasm resources and green and efficient cultivation of Shanlan upland rice.

The research was supported by key research and development projects in Hainan Province, the National Key Science and Technology Special Project, and the United Nations Development Programme Global Environment Facility.
